You can get lost in Washington DC, even with directions

A colleague and were flying to Washington DC, Reagan International airport, to visit an account in the Bethesda area.  Neither of us had been to DC much and so we got directions.  Get on the George Washington Parkway and head north.  Whatever you do, stay out of Arlington Cemetery and don’t take a bridge into DC.  It sounded simple enough.  We got our rental car and headed out.  Fortunately it was about 10:30 on a Sunday evening, so there wasn’t much traffic.  We saw the George Washington Parkway, but couldn’t see how to get on it.  So we kept going and ended up in Crystal City, not our intended destination.  We managed to get back close to the airport and got on route 1.  We thought that we could take the next exit to get over to the George Washington Parkway.  Oh no, we ended up going across the Potomac and found ourselves in George Town.  We wondered our way around DC not knowing where we were.  At one point I look up at the street sign and it was Pennsylvania Ave.  Um, that sounds familiar.  We managed to get on Constitution Ave and found our way back across the Potomac and this time we found an entrance to the George Washington Parkway.  Finally on our way,  we arrived at Bethesda two and half hours after we had arrived at the airport.  You might think this was terrible experience, but the opposite was true.  We laughed and laughed about our misfortune.  It was a beautiful evening and the buildings and monuments of DC were absolutely beautiful.
