I was meeting with an insurance executive of a small start-up insurance company in San Francisco discussing business requirements when used furniture arrived. The executive asked me to help him level the desk so that they could start using them the following day. Not having a level, the executive suggested that we use the next best thing, a can of soda. I had never thought about it, but a can of soda will not move one way or the other if it is on a level plain. However, it if is not, it will roll one way or the other. You then adjust the legs of desk until the can of soda no longer moves. Once one way is level, you turn the can of soda the other way and repeat the process, adjusting the legs of the desk until the can of soda no longer moves. You repeat the process for the first direction just to make sure that you have not messed up that side. Just as a warming, I would not recommend drinking the can of soda once you have completed this process, as the can of soda gets shake-up just a little. That small start-up insurance company was Esurance, now an Allstate Company. I bet that their maintenance folks have real levels now and the can of soda has been retired to the vending machine.
