ERMS Data Governance Mapping C-A-R

Company/Time frame: Markel Insurance Company, Glen Allen, VA March 2016 – August 2016

Position: Data Governance Analyst

Project description: Map specific data elements such as Line of Business and Event codes in the ERMS policy management system to ISO/Markel standards. It order to accomplish this task, I took source data from the ERMS system and mapped it primarily by using field descriptions. For example, I mapped claim event codes for hurricanes, fires, and other events to ISO/Markel values.

Challenge: When I took over this project, the mapping of ERMS data hadn’t been updated since 2014, so a lot of data was invalid. Also several changes had been implemented in the ERMS system since the last mapping, so most of the mapped had to done from scratch.

Action: I mapped 20 different fields to conformed values. Once the mapping was completed, it was reviewed with data stewards responsible for the data to secure their approval. Upon their approval, I provided instructions to IS so that the appropriate data could be loaded into the data warehouse for future reporting and analysis. I also updated reference information as necessary to be used during future mapping efforts for ERMS or other Markel systems.  I also updated documentation about how to perform this process, again for future reference.  Finally, I updated their SharePoint side with the new reference values.

Result: The mapping was completed and approved within the time-frame requested by management.  Markel executives could better analyze various operational areas performance and make more informed decisions regarding what lines of business should be pursued or cut back. The process also showed data quality issues where operational procedures need to be improved.
